Growing Tasmania's Agricultural Future

Tasmanian Government

Tasmania's future as a leader in agricultural innovation has taken a significant step forward.

Construction has now commenced on the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture's new $20.2 million Grow Facility at the University of Tasmania's Newnham campus, creating a major new hub for research and development in the north.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said the purpose-built facility will strengthen Tasmania's agricultural research capabilities and help develop the next generation of scientists, researchers and industry professionals.

"This is the beginning of a new chapter for agricultural research, education and innovation in Tasmania," Minister Pearce said.

"This investment will see our great state remain at the forefront of agricultural science and innovation.

"This project complements our Government's continued investment in agricultural research and development, including our recent $1.5 million investment in the Agriculture Research and Development Fund.

"Agriculture continues to be one of Tasmania's most important industries, supporting regional communities, jobs and economic growth.

"Through our Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we are steadfast in our commitment to growing the annual farmgate value of our agricultural sector to $10 billion by 2025.

"As our producers navigate climate variability, evolving markets, biosecurity risks and changing consumer expectations, access to world-class research and expertise has never been more important."

The new Facility will provide a new glasshouse complex and outdoor growing facilities to support teaching and research into climate-resilient crops, soil health, biosecurity, sustainable farming systems and productivity-enhancing technologies.
