Guns, drugs, cash seized when Highway Patrol stops 4WD near Narrabri

Two men are due in Moree court today charged after Highway Patrol officers discovered five firearms, ammunition, drugs and cash when a 4WD was stopped at Narrabri overnight.

Officers from the Narrabri and Moree Highway Patrol stopped a Mitsubishi Pajero on the Newell Highway, 10km south of Narrabri, about 6.30pm (Saturday 27 April 2019), and spoke with the two male occupants.

When officers searched the vehicle, they found two rifles - one reported stolen from a property at Burren Junction in January this year - as well as two shot guns (one sawn-off), and a handgun.

The firearms will undergo forensic and ballistic examination.

Police also seized ammunition, cannabis and more than $4500 cash, jewellery, and a key to a quad bike reported stolen from Baradine in February this year.

The men, both aged 24 and from Baradine, were arrested and taken to Narrabri Police Station.

The driver has now been charged with 14 offences:

  • Possess unregistered firearms, one a prohibited/pistol
  • Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority
  • Possess unregistered firearm - not prohibited firearm/pistol (two counts)
  • Possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority (three counts)
  • Possess prohibited drug (two counts)
  • Knowingly deal with proceeds of crime
  • Goods in custody suspected being stolen (two counts)
  • Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit (two counts).

The passenger has been charged with five offences:

  • Possess unregistered firearms (one a prohibited/pistol)
  • Possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority (three counts)
  • Possess unregistered firearm.

Both men were refused bail and are due to appear in Moree Local Court today (Sunday 28 February 2019).
