Work has officially begun on the redevelopment of the Don Road Community and Sporting Pavilion and broader reserve upgrades, marking a major milestone for a project long anticipated by sporting clubs and community groups across Healesville.
Expected to be completed in 2027, the $8.25 million project, including the recently awarded $5.75 million pavilion construction contact, will deliver a modern, inclusive and accessible pavilion for local sport and community activities, alongside upgrades to the existing soccer pavilion, car parking and drainage infrastructure. Together, these improvements will create a more welcoming, functional and connected precinct that can support the needs of the Healesville community for generations to come.
Representatives of the Healesville Football Netball Club, Junior Football Club, Cricket Club, U3A and Living and Learning Centre joined Council and Australian Government representative Senator Lisa Darmanin to turn the sod on the new pavilion.
Ryrie Ward Councillor, Fiona McAllister, said the redeveloped pavilion and wider reserve will service more than 900 users on a weekly basis.
"The new Don Road Community and Sports Pavilion will be a place where people can learn, connect, volunteer, celebrate and spend time together, strengthening community life in Healesville for years to come," Cr McAllister said.
"With Healesville U3A and the Living and Learning Centre to run programs out of the pavilion, alongside local sporting clubs, more than 900 people are expected to regularly use this space on a weekly basis.
"The pavilion will provide flexible spaces for classes, meetings, community events and social activities, creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and build connections.
"And for our many local sporting clubs that call Don Road home, it will also provide modern facilities, supporting players, officials, and spectators with accessible and inclusive amenities.
"Don Road has long been a place where people come together, whether through sport, learning, volunteering or community events. It has played an important role in the life of Healesville and created lasting connections across generations.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the upgrades to the sporting complex, including the new pavilion, continue that legacy, providing a welcoming space where people can connect, learn and belong for generations to come.
"Thank you to the Federal Government for its generous support in helping deliver this important community project."
The Australian Government's Thriving Suburbs Fund has contributed $5.75 million toward the project, with Yarra Ranges Council funding the remaining $2.45 million.
Senator Lisa Darmanin said the sod turning marks an exciting milestone.
"Community sport brings people together. This new pavilion will help ensure Don Road remains a welcoming and inclusive home for the Healesville community.
"The Australian Government is proud to invest in modern, accessible facilities that will support local clubs and community groups to grow and thrive.

Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2027.
