The Tasmanian Government is supporting our cultural and creative industries so they can thrive into the future and continue to provide jobs throughout the State.

That's why we have supported the development of the $110 million The Hedberg Complex incorporating the Theatre Royal, which was officially opened today.

This cutting edge facility is an exciting new addition to Hobart's CBD and will further enhance Tasmania's position as a leader in the creative, performing and digital arts.

Delivered through a unique partnership between the University of Tasmania, State and Federal Governments, and the Theatre Royal, The Hedberg is set to become a world-class hub for artists, creative practitioners, educators and students, as well as a 'must-see' cultural destination for Tasmanian, interstate and international lovers of the arts.

The Hedberg is the latest addition to Hobart's creative precinct, which includes the Theatre Royal, Federation Concert Hall, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and the University of Tasmania's campuses including the Centre for the Arts and The Media School.

Designed by Hobart-based architecture studio LIMINAL, and its Singaporean partners, WOHA architects, The Hedberg development connects and blends the old with the new. Comprising improvements to the historic Theatre Royal, including contemporary back of house facilities and a new Studio Theatre, the facility also incorporates a new home for the University of Tasmania's Conservatorium of Music amongst state-of-the-art performance venues and public spaces.

The Tasmanian Government provided $30 million in funding support for this project, demonstrating our strong commitment to Tasmania's cultural economy, and recognising the economic and social value of our creative sector. In addition, we have provided increased funding to the Theatre Royal, to assist them with operating their new facilities.

The future of Tasmania's cultural and creative industries is bright despite the current challenging environment. With The Hedberg now officially open, all Tasmanians can look forward to enjoying this beautiful venue as it plays host to local, national and international works for many years to come.
