The investments have returned more than 400 million Euros since 2019
University of Helsinki's financial security investments returned 6.0 percent in 2025. Since the beginning of 2019, when the University adopted the current strategy, the investments have returned cumulatively 116.9 percent, or approximately 440 million Euros. The average annual return has been 11.7 percent, which is 2.0 percentage points higher than for the benchmark index. The strong devaluation of the US Dollar depressed the return in 2025, but the impact of exchange rates has been limited in the long run, in line with the expected value suggested by .
"We are very happy that the financial security investments have increased our solidity this significantly. Furthermore, as over 90 percent are very liquid, it strongly supports our financial preparedness, in an ever more uncertain operating environment", states Chief Financial Officer Marjo Berglund.
University of Helsinki's twelve-month return in was 13.6 percent in June. It is comparable with US educational endowments' Fiscal Year 2025 returns, and even reached among Ivy League universities according to preliminary information. NACUBO is expected to release the 2025 return comparison during the first quarter, after which the University of Helsinki announces how it was placed.
University of Helsinki's investment activities are built firmly on science. Its corner stones are broad diversification, low costs, a consequent risk level, and the mitigation of climate change. At least 90 percent of the assets are diversified globally in listed stocks and bonds. Furthermore, at most 10 percent of the assets are focused in spinout and startup companies founded around the University of Helsinki.
