It is an historic day for transgender people in Tasmania with amendments to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Act passing through Parliament.
Shadow Attorney General, Ella Haddad, said after a long time waiting, transgender people could now finally be free from discrimination through outdated legislation.
"Today marks a significant outcome for people in our community who have been fighting for decades just to enjoy the same rights as everyone else," Ms Haddad said.
"For Labor, this has always been about fairness and choice. All Tasmanians have the right to be treated equally.
"The outdated requirement that people undergo invasive surgery to be recognised for who they are is gone.
"There is now a fair, simple process for people to have identity documents that reflect who they are.
"These changes are simple. They will have a tangible effect on the people who need them, without infringing on or diminishing the rights of anyone else.
"This is a fine example of parliament working to truly end discrimination and we congratulate the Speaker Sue Hickey for upholding her commitment to the transgender community."
