The University of Hong Kong (HKU) conferred honorary degrees upon three distinguished individuals at the 216th Congregation. The ceremony was officiated by Dr the Honourable Sir David Li, Pro-Chancellor of HKU, and held at Loke Yew Hall in the Main Building today (26 November).
Three honourees were conferred at the ceremony. Professor Gang Chen, a globally renowned pioneering figure in power engineering, nanoscale heat transfer and energy sciences, and Professor Arthur Li, a distinguished educator and surgeon with outstanding contributions to Hong Kong's education and medical sectors, received the Doctor of Science honoris causa. Dr Patrick Poon, a pioneering actuary, distinguished business leader and committed philanthropist, received the Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa.
Dr Patrick Poon delivered an acceptance speech on behalf of the honorary degree recipients.
"What a year it has been for the University of Hong Kong. It is exciting to see the University setting new records globally and regionally. Dividends of this collective success are surely to be immediately enjoyed by graduating students and the University community. Of course, the three of us are delighted to share in this auspicious period in the University's history. We wish the University every success and continued innovation," said Dr Poon.
Dr Poon also reflected on how geopolitics affected academic environments around the world in recent years and the unexpected challenges often arise in education, but academic institutions must strive to maintain a supportive environment for students, educators, and researchers to thrive.
Honorary Degrees are awarded to individuals in recognition of their distinguished service and commitment to the University, the community, and to academia. They are also conferred to those who have made valuable intellectual, social and cultural contributions to society and the world.
