HKU Boosts Cultural, Language Enrichment for Local Teens

The English For "U" Language Enrichment Camp for Local Junior Secondary School Students, organised by the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) of HKU, was concluded with a Graduation Ceremony on April 20. On two consecutive Saturdays, HKU students showcased to local teens the rich and vibrant student life on HKU campus, led them to explore the history, culture and scenic spots of the university, and demonstrated to them how English can be used easily and effectively in communication.

Since 2021, over 300 HKU students joined the Language Enrichment Programmes (ENGLISH-TO-GO for primary school students and English For "U" for junior secondary school students) to create a unique taste of university life and enriching learning experience for around 420 local students.

Mr Laurence Tang, Director of Campus Life, HKU CEDARS, highlighted: "The three main foci of the programme are to ENGAGE, EMPOWER and ENRICH. Adopting a train-the-trainer approach, HKU students learn to lead and serve. For local teens, they can interact with our HKU students including over 50 international students coming from Ireland, India, Korea, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tanzania etc. They could increase their understanding about cultural diversity and realise English is essential for communication, thus instil their enthusiasm for this global language."

Shakhdiyar Yerken, a second year business student from Kazakhstan said: "I appreciated this programme by giving me an opportunity to apply my leadership and facilitation skills. I can work with my local peers to serve the community, giving me a better understanding of Hong Kong society and local education system. We hope we can create a positive learning experience and impact on the participants, and inspire them to become HKUers in future."

Miss Kwok, teacher from STFA Seaward Woo College remarked: "The camp was a truly rewarding and eye-opening experience for my students. They all look up to HKU students as their role models. The two days at HKU has left a small seed in their hearts and would definitely encourage them to study hard in future."
