The Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Universities Summit 2025, held from 22 to 24 April in Macao, brought together leading academic and industry experts to explore Asia's rise as a global hub for innovation in science, technology, society, and research. Professor Stephanie Ma, Associate Vice-President (Research and Innovation) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), participated in the Summit as a panelist, sharing her insights on excellence, impact and future of academia in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
Professor Ma joined a session titled "Academia futura: Universities for excellence and impact in the AI age," which examined the critical role universities play in shaping the cities and regions they inhabit. The discussion also highlighted the diverse ways universities create impact, from fundamental scientific advancements to economic and societal contributions, and explored how these impacts can be measured and showcased. With the rapid integration of AI into academia, the session also touched upon how AI can enhance metrics and methods for capturing and demonstrating university impact.
During the panel, Professor Ma shared her insights on how excellence and impact are defined at HKU, showcasing examples of research innovations that have made a difference in the community. Professor Ma emphasised how HKU scholars were pioneers in sequencing the genome of the novel coronavirus, leading to advancements in diagnostic tests and vaccine development. Additionally, Professor Ma highlighted the University's data-driven public health measures and sewage surveillance initiatives for tracking potential COVID-19 carriers in the community.
Professor Ma further highlighted Hong Kong's distinctive position within the Greater Bay Area and HKU's dedication to nurturing a research environment that not only enhances academic knowledge but also facilitates the translation of research innovations into meaningful societal impact.
Professor Ma said that universities must embrace innovation and collaboration to maximise their impact on society in the AI age.
