HKU Laboratory for Space Research to Host APRIM2026

The Asia-Pacific Regional IAU Meeting 2026 (APRIM2026), one of the most influential global astronomy conferences, will be held for the first time in Hong Kong from May 4 to 8, 2026, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organised under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and hosted by the Laboratory for Space Research (LSR) at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), the meeting is expected to bring together around 1,000 of the world's leading astronomers, space scientists, engineers, educators, and policy makers. APRIM2026 will feature internationally renowned researchers, including Nobel and Shaw Prize Laureates, underscoring the international stature and significance of this event.

In support of this landmark event, the IAU has announced that the Shaw Prize Foundation will be a lead supporter of APRIM2026, with a generous contribution of HKD 1 million (approximately EUR 111,000). Astronomy is an emerging scientific discipline in many countries across the Asia-Pacific region, where resources to support international engagement are often limited. This tremendous donation will help broaden participation by enabling more professional astronomers, particularly early-career researchers, to take part in APRIM2026, fostering meaningful scientific exchange and strengthening the development of astronomy in the region.

Highlighting the significance of this partnership, Professor Kenneth YOUNG, Chair of Shaw Prize Council, says, 'The Shaw Prize Foundation is pleased to lend its support to the IAU Asia Pacific Regional Meeting, affirming our enduring commitment to the advancement of scientific discovery and international collaboration in astronomy.'

Echoing this support, Professor Willy BENZ, President of IAU, emphasised the impact of the funding on the scientific community, 'The Asia-Pacific region is home to cutting-edge astronomy research of global significance. The IAU is delighted that this funding will allow many more early-career researchers to engage with world-class science. We are honoured to receive such substantial funding from the Shaw Prize and are extremely grateful for their ongoing commitment to promoting scientific excellence.'

As the host of the upcoming meeting, Professor Quentin PARKER, Chair of the APRIM2026 and Director of HKU Laboratory for Space Research, remarks, 'It is a great honour for Hong Kong to serve as the host city for the prestigious Asia-Pacific Regional IAU meeting. We are also grateful to the Shaw Prize Foundation, founded in our city, for supporting the meeting with its very generous HKD 1 million sponsorship. This vital funding will help ensure the success of the event and cement the Shaw Foundation's international reputation for its major support of science in general, but astronomy and space science on this occasion.
