Hobart Expands Crisis, Transitional Housing for Women, Kids

Australian Treasury

The Commonwealth and Tasmanian Governments are delivering more safe, secure housing for women and children escaping family and domestic violence, with the first stage of a major expansion of the Hobart Women's Shelter now complete and further homes under construction.

Works unveiled today include upgraded communal spaces, with new therapy, meeting and recreation rooms to strengthen the support services available to tenants on site.

Construction is also underway on a further 15 self‑contained apartments, which will allow the shelter to support an additional 260 women and children, or up to 15,000 additional safe bed nights each year

This project has been supported by:

  • $3.08 million from the Safe Places Inclusion Round, part of the Commonwealth Government's broader $1.2 billion investment in crisis and transitional housing
  • $6 million in capital funding, plus $386,700 per annum to operate the 15 additional new units, from the Tasmanian Government.

This project sits alongside the Commonwealth Government's ambitious $45 billion housing plan to boost supply, remove barriers to construction and deliver 55,000 social and affordable homes across the country.

"These homes are about something pretty simple - making sure women and kids have a safe place to go when things fall apart. That's what good governments do. And it's what we're getting on with.

"We've already finished more than 6,000 social and affordable homes, and there are another 24,000 on the way - because this isn't theoretical. It's about real people, right now."

Quotes attributable to the Tasmanian Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent

"No Tasmanian wants to find themselves in need of crisis care, but for many it's a vital service.

"We are working closely with all levels of Government and our community to ensure our services are able to provide accommodation when its needed.

"We are delivering for Tasmania by coming at housing from every angle, and supporting key crisis accommodation for women and children is an incredibly important part of our housing system.

"I want to thank the Australian Government for their contribution to delivering more housing in Tasmania, especially for those in the most need.

"The Commonwealth and Tasmanian Governments are delivering more safe, secure housing."
