The rollout of new, fully compostable dog poo bags in dispensers across Hobart will prevent almost a million single use plastic bags going into landfill every year.
"This week we started installing fully compostable dog waste bags in dispensers across Hobart's favourite dog-walking parks and we're encouraging our dog-loving community to use them every time they take their pooch for a stroll," Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.
"These new dog waste bags are fully compostable, can be added to your FOGO bin and as our own tests show break down completely to create wonderful compost.
"In the past single use plastic bags used to collect dog poo went straight to landfill, where they will remain indefinitely. These new plant-based bags and their contents can go straight into composting systems.
"We also plan to introduce public FOGO bins at key locations across Hobart to encourage more people to help us reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill.
"These fully compostable plant-based bags are another step forward in our efforts to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2030."
The bags are certified under Australian Standards, and the deal will see around 900,000 compostable bags being used across Hobart every year instead of plastic bags.
FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics. Material collected in FOGO bins is taken to an industrial composting facility outside of Hobart where it is transformed into compost.
Pet poo and cat litter can go into FOGO bins, as can certified compostable bags.
The new bags are made from plant-based materials and are completely organic.
