Horizon Europe Pact Elevates Aussie Innovation Globally

Universities Australia congratulates the Australian government on the conclusion of treaty negotiations for Australia's association with Horizon Europe.

"This is a major win for Australian research, innovation and economic growth," Universities Australia Chief Executive Officer Luke Sheehy said.

"Horizon Europe is the world's largest research and innovation program. If Australia is serious about lifting productivity, building sovereign capability and competing in the industries of the future, this is the table we need to be sitting at.

"I want to congratulate Minister Ayres and the government for delivering on this commitment.

"Importantly, this isn't just an opportunity for a handful of universities. Association with Horizon Europe opens the door for researchers at universities right across Australia to participate in and lead world-class international research collaborations.

"That means more opportunities to attract investment, commercialise ideas, build partnerships and turn Australian research into real-world outcomes.

"From clean energy and critical minerals to advanced manufacturing, health, digital technologies and artificial intelligence, Horizon Europe will connect Australian researchers to some of the biggest and most important research projects in the world.

"Australian universities are already deeply connected to global research networks. Horizon Europe will help take those partnerships to the next level and ensure Australian researchers can contribute to, and benefit from, the discoveries and technologies that will shape our future.

"Research and innovation are essential to Australia's future prosperity, and international collaboration is increasingly central to how breakthroughs are made.

"Access to Horizon Europe is a win for Australia, but it must be backed by new investment, so participation strengthens our research system rather than drawing resources away from it.

"We look forward to working with government and the sector to ensure Australian researchers can make the most of the opportunities Horizon Europe presents."
