Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, is calling on the Greater Cincinnati community to make a lifesaving blood or platelet donation to help local patients in need during the critical summer months. Hoxworth is calling all donors and needs all blood types and platelets.
"Blood levels are lower than we'd like at this time of year," said Ashley Smith, Hoxworth's senior public information officer. "We're urging our community to make a donation appointment now - it's quick, easy, and lifesaving."

- Hoxworth needs 450 donors every day to supply more than 30 local hospitals with their blood products
- One in seven hospitalized patients need blood
- More than 80% of deaths in the operating room and nearly 50% of deaths in the first 24 hours after injury are due to severe blood loss
- Gunshot victims are approximately five times more likely to need blood transfusions, requiring 10 times more blood than other traumas
- 50 red blood cell units can be used by a person injured in a car accident
- More than 25% of the blood supply is used by patients battling cancer
- In patients older than 64, transfusion of blood and blood products ranks as the second most common procedure performed in U.S. hospitals
Appointments are highly encouraged. Donors can schedule by calling (513) 451-0910 or by scheduling online at www.hoxworth.org.
