The City of Greater Bendigo is developing a Huntly Structure Plan to provide a coordinated strategic framework for Huntly over the next 30 years and residents are invited to get involved in a Community Reference Group.
The Huntly Structure Plan will provide a framework for the future expansion of the town, explore opportunities for additional commercial and retail offerings and consider the infrastructure needs of the community. The new Huntly station also increases the suburb's accessibility and appeal as a desirable place to live.
City Manager Strategic Planning Anthony Petherbridge said Huntly had experienced strong growth within the new residential estates and continued developer interest in further growth beyond the zoned residential land.
"There are several constraints which need to be considered carefully before any direction can be developed for growth such as flooding, bushfire and native vegetation considerations," Mr Petherbridge said.
"An important focus of the project will be to bring the community, landowners, businesses and other key stakeholders together to develop an achievable plan which will ultimately help to guide and transform Huntly over time.
"A structure plan is the best way to plan for future growth and consists of plans, policies, maps and guidelines that identify areas for new development, redevelopment, incremental change and improvements and infrastructure.
"This is an extensive project and there will be significant community consultation opportunities in August and September, but the first step will be to create a Community Reference Group and I encourage people from all walks of life and skills to apply and get involved in the planning for Huntly's future growth."
The Community Reference Group will operate for the duration of the project which is expected to be approximately two years. Meetings will be held in the evenings on weekdays at a location in Huntly every second month for around 60 to 90 minutes.
The City is seeking around 10 to 12 members with representation from a broad range of the community with a diversity in interests, backgrounds, skills and views. Individual residents, as well as representatives from a community group, business, workplace, and sporting groups, are welcome.
