IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol has been named by Time as one of the world's most influential people for the second time, placing him in this year's illustrious Time 100 list alongside distinguished leaders from government, business, culture and sport from around the world.
The Time 100 list recognises the impact, innovation and achievement of the most influential individuals across the globe. Dr Birol was previously included in the list in 2021. In this year's list, he was placed in the Leaders category. By being named in it in two separate years, he joins an exclusive group of heads of government, top CEOs and cultural icons who have appeared in the Time 100 more than once over the past two decades.
"This is very humbling. The IEA is a small international organisation in terms of our budget and staffing, but I believe this honour reflects the huge value of the work we do to help countries around the world deliver on their goals of improving energy security, affordability and sustainability - including in challenging times such as the current moment," said Dr Birol. "I share this honour with my committed and hard-working colleagues at the IEA. We are a rigorous, data-driven organisation, and we are determined to lead the global energy journey towards the betterment of humanity."
Time said that Dr Birol "has worked to keep countries aligned even as the world fragments, ensuring the IEA remains true to its founding mission of energy security and cooperation".
"What sets Fatih apart is not only his commitment to facts and data, but his ability to anticipate new challenges while emphasizing the importance of abundant energy for development in the Global South and the need to address energy's role in climate change," it said.
