As part of the ILO project "Skills for an Environmentally Sustainable Transition in Moldova", the Girls4Green initiative inspires girls and young women to lead Moldova's inclusive green transition. Through the Girls4Green Boot Camp, 31 girls aged 13 to 17 strengthened their understanding of climate change and discovered pathways to careers in renewable energy, sustainable construction, and environmental innovation. The project is funded by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and the Liechtenstein Development Service (LED).
Developed by the ILO in collaboration with EcoVisio and EcoVillage Moldova, the initiative helped girls from across the country -including from rural and vulnerable communities-gain confidence, broaden their career aspirations, and see themselves as future leaders in the green economy.
Experiential hands-on activities, such as the 'Keep Cool' climate simulation and conversations with female engineers and green entrepreneurs-inspired the girls and expanded their ideas about the possibilities for their own future career paths.
The girls said they acquired a much better understanding of green careers, environmental work and the roles women can take in technology. Many called the experience "lifechanging", inspiring them to consider environmental studies, adopt sustainable practices, and start projects in their communities.

"When girls see women leading in green jobs, it reshapes what they believe is possible," said Vera Chilari, ILO Project Coordinator. "Girls4Green shows that empowering young women is key to a just and inclusive green transition."

The young participants did not hold back with positive feedback: "This camp was a 10+ experience," said one girl. "We learned, felt inspired, and saw that protecting the planet can be a career." Another added: "Although the camp has ended, it feels like a new beginning. I now know that girls can build a greener Moldova."
Building on these outcomes, the ILO and partners plan to expand Girls4Green with longer training programmes and study visits to vocational schools, motivating more young women to envision future careers in the green economy.
