Increasing our open space for all to enjoy

From time to time the City of Stonnington purchases properties in the Stonnington municipality. One of the key reasons for purchase is to support the need to increase the amount of open space within our community.

When we developed our Public Realm Strategy in 2010, one of our actions was to prepare a land acquisition and conversion strategy to support increasing the provision of open space in Stonnington. This strategy is called 'Strategies for Creating Open Spaces'.

Over the past five years, we have purchased several properties to support a wide range of Council initiatives, with many of them bought to facilitate the creation of additional open space for community enjoyment.

When we purchase properties for open space, we do not compulsorily acquire them. Instead we try to identify land that may become available at some future time, and only act if and when it becomes available.

Since 2017, we have purchased a number of properties. Some of the highlights include:

Identified as a location for future open space in the Hawksburn Village Structure Plan (2016), we purchased this site in late 2018. In collaboration with the local community, this site has now been fully converted into open space and features an irrigated lawn, tiered garden beds and a shelter with bespoke seating which provides an informal space for community gatherings.
