James Street closure to help encourage safer behaviour at Northbridge

The City of Perth will support the WA Police closure of James Street as part of a four-week trial.

The Northbridge entertainment strip will become a pedestrian priority zone on Friday and Saturday evenings from 28 October to 19 November.

The City of Perth has received a $100,000 State Government CBD Revitalisation Grant to provide a range of events during the trial.

"There'll be a range of free entertainment including movies at Northbridge Piazza on Saturday nights, circus performers and live music acts," Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said.

"You might even catch a bit of the T20 cricket action live on the big screen in the Piazza," he said.

The street entertainment will be shared across three areas including Central Stage and the eastern end of James Street as well as Northbridge Piazza from 7pm to 10pm Fridays and Saturday nights.

On Saturdays, the fun kicks off even earlier, with a free family movie at Northbridge Piazza from 5pm.

"Part of Melbourne Street will become a dedicated ride share and taxi zone to help people get home safely and easily," Mr Zempilas said.

"We'll maintain a security presence in this area from 10pm till 4am," he said.

"We're also encouraging restaurants and cafes to apply for free alfresco permits so they can offer outdoor dining options.

"We want to support the WA Police in their efforts to ensure a safer Northbridge and we encourage everyone to come and join in the fun.

"We'd love to see people come into Northbridge, enjoy the entertainment and grab dinner at one of the many fine restaurants and cafes in the area."
