Discover everything your local library has to offer when Kiama Library and Gerringong Library throw open their doors for a special Library Open Day on Thursday 30 July.
Part of the statewide Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds public libraries campaign, the free community open day will showcase the many ways libraries enrich lives beyond borrowing books, with a full day of activities, demonstrations, tours and family-friendly fun.
Visitors can explore local history through guided tours of Kiama Library's History Centre and the Gerringong Museum, or learn how to preserve treasured memories using Kiama's new Preservation Station for digitising slides, photos, cassettes and videotapes.
The program also includes silent reading parties, mindful colouring sessions, book tasting events, craft activities and afternoon teas. Children can enjoy bookmark-making activities at Kiama, or storytime at Gerringong with local children's author Karen Hendriks, and an after-school seed planting workshop.
Book lovers can take part in the "Adopt a Classic" initiative run by the Friends of Kiama Library, by sponsoring a favourite title and adding their name to a commemorative bookplate.
Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald said the libraries were a treasure trove of information, great books and much more.
"The Open Day is a magnificent way for anyone who doesn't use the libraries regularly to come and have a look at what's on offer," he said.
"We are fortunate to have two fabulous libraries which support and strengthen our local communities in many ways beyond the traditional book-borrowing service."
All Open Day activities are free and no bookings are required. Everyone is welcome to drop in throughout the day and discover why libraries remain vital places for learning, creativity, connection and community.
