Griffith City Council has welcomed the announcement of a $5 million safety upgrade to Kidman Way at Willbriggie, with work set to begin later this month under the Australian and NSW Government's Road Safety Program.
Griffith City Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, said the project was an important step in improving safety on a key regional freight route.
"The safety of our community and road users is paramount, so it is very pleasing to see this upgrade progressing," Councillor Curran said.
"The Kidman Way plays a critical role, particularly during harvest, but also being a major route between Brisbane and Melbourne and these works will help reduce risk while improving efficiency for all road users.
"I want to acknowledge the accidents, near misses and loss of life near the proposed roadworks, I hope these works in some small way reduce the trauma associated with those tragic events."
The project includes realignment of the Willbriggie bend, road widening, improved intersections and installation of safety barriers.
Site preparation will begin on Monday 20 April, with major works from mid-May and completion expected by late October, weather permitting.
During work, motorists are advised to follow the direction of traffic control, which will include reduced speed limits of 40 km/h. A reduced speed limit of 60 km/h will be in place outside of work hours.
