Wishlist play equipment designs by local primary school children have shaped Winchelsea's new Adventure Play Space.

Treehouse pods, a flying fox, slope slide and rock climbing wall are among elements to have progressed from Texta-drawn concepts to built features of the space now enhancing the town's Barwon River recreation precinct.

Surf Coast Shire Council invited grade five and six pupils from Winchelsea Primary School to share ideas for 'the ultimate playground' at a design workshop during project planning.

Community members have already enjoyed the playground and new shelter inspired by the former mud hut, and will gather for the formal opening of the Adventure Play Space on 29 August.

Member for Western Victoria The Hon. Gayle Tierney will join Mayor Mike Bodsworth and councillors for the opening ceremony.

Council contributed $750,000 to the project and appreciates $250,000 funding from the Victorian Government through Sport and Recreation Victoria.

Councillor Tony Phelps encouraged community members to join the opening celebration.

"I'm sure many of our local young families might have already given the Adventure Play Space a run and found it to be a fabulous addition to our riverside area," Cr Phelps said.

"Adjoining the existing playground, new pool and new gathering shelter with barbecue it helps create a welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the environs and some healthy activity.

"Special thanks and congratulations to the primary school children who helped provide inspiration for the play space installation designs. They have helped create a really special place for play, fun and letting imaginations run. And thanks to community members who were involved in guiding the design of the gathering space shelter and working on the cob wall to tie the design back to the former mud hut."

The Adventure Play Space has all abilities access and the flying fox provides wheelchair access and an accessible seat.

Community members are welcome to attend the Adventure Play Space official opening at 3.30pm, Friday 29 August, 12 Barwon Terrace. The event will start with a Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country.
