King’s College London

The English Social Mobility Index for 2022 has listed King's College London as the fifth best university in the country for social mobility - rising four places from last year.

Published by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), the UK's only independent think tank devoted to higher education, the Index ranks universities' contributions to social mobility by identifying how much students from disadvantaged backgrounds progress after graduating.

This year's Index examines data on graduate outcomes for students more closely, following a change in methodology from last year. Instead of looking at graduate outcomes for all students, it now combines the number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds that each university has supported with how those students progress after university.

We are delighted King's has performed so well in the Social Mobility Index. It recognises the hard work of so many people across the university who are working to support students from underrepresented backgrounds into higher education, as well as enabling them to thrive during their studies and beyond.– President & Principal of King's College London, Professor Shitij Kapur
We should do more to celebrate those universities which make a contribution to real social mobility - that means getting on, not just getting in. This is why I'm so delighted that this new league table is seeking to do exactly that.– Rt Hon Michelle Donelan MP, Minister of State for Higher and Further Education
Our position in this index underlines our commitment to widening participation and supporting students from all backgrounds to succeed in higher education. We are proud to champion this work through a number of initiatives - such as K+, our flagship post-16 programme which celebrates 10 years of running this year - to support students before, during and after their time at King's. Across King's there is a clear shared mission to support students to thrive in higher education and go on to follow their passions and achieve their goals. – Associate Director of Social Mobility & Widening Participation, Michael Bennett
