Kyneton Showgrounds Project Update

The following is a project update in relation to the Kyneton Showgrounds Master Plan implementation, following the recent VCAT hearing outcome.

Response attributable to Shane Walden, Director Assets and Operations, Macedon Ranges Shire Council:

Implementation of the Kyneton Showgrounds Master Plan will progress following a decision by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) to strike out an objector application submitted in late 2023 to review Council's decision to grant a planning permit for the tree removal on the site.

During the VCAT hearing held on Friday 5 April 2024, it was determined that due to an amendment to the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme (Amendment C145) on 22 February 2024, a permit was no longer required for the removal of the 10 non-native mature trees located where the new netball courts and facilities are proposed.

Council takes tree removal decisions seriously and considered the independent arborist report that identified the ten trees to be in various stages of declining tree health. At least six trees are at end of life posing serious risks such as branch failure and tree collapse, which could endanger property and public safety.

The trees will be replaced with new trees. Further tree planting will also occur as the overall Kyneton Showground Master Plan progresses.

In the meantime, work on the detailed design for the new netball facilities continues, with input and guidance from key user groups, Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV) and Netball Victoria (NV). An updated design will be shared with Netball Victoria and key user groups in the coming weeks.

Construction of the new netball facilities is planned to commence at the completion of the 2024 football/netball season.
