Labor's Housing Targets Fail To Deliver For Victorians

Liberal Party Victoria

Victorians continue to pay the price of Labor's failed housing targets through soaring rents, plummeting affordability and a housing system that no longer delivers.

The Allan Labor Government dual housing targets of building 800,000 new homes over ten years for a 70/30 split of these homes between established suburbs and growth areas have both proven to be failures.

Recent ABS data has confirmed the number of homes being built is at a decade low, as property taxes and burdensome red tape continue to strangle Victoria's construction sector.

Only the Victorian Liberals and Nationals have a comprehensive plan to deliver more homes, more choice and better affordability. We will:

  • Scrap Labor's 70/30 target - delivering more housing and more choice across the whole state.
  • Fast-track home building in existing, identified growth areas - clearing Labor's backlog of 27 Precinct Structure Plans (PSPs) to get more homes built sooner.
  • Rejuvenate Melbourne's CBD as a place to live and work - expanding the Capital City Zone (CCZ) to enable more development, housing and economic opportunity.
  • Deliver liveable middle and outer suburbs - restoring the local voice to planning to guide the future of neighbourhoods through community-led structure plans.
  • Build new homes in our regional centres - working directly with local councils to support sustainable growth across regional Victoria.
  • Reduce property taxes - progressively restoring the land tax-free threshold to $300,000 and lifting the stamp duty exemption for first home buyers to $1 million.

Shadow Minister for Planning, David Southwick, said: "When it comes to housing, under Labor, you get what you're told but under the Liberals and Nationals, you can choose what you want.

"Labor's housing targets and forced densification have failed and Victorians are paying the price with the worst housing crisis in a generation.

"You can't fit 70 per cent of new homes into suburbs where the drains, the schools and the trains are already at breaking point. Labor knows it, the industry knows it, and Victorians stuck in housing queues know it.

"A Liberals and Nationals Government will scrap Labor's broken targets and deliver more homes, more choice and better housing affordability for all Victorians."
