The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Lake Macquarie City Council to name a reserve in the suburb of Murrays Beach as Karakai Park.
Council consulted with the Awabakal Descendants Traditional Owners Corporation who provided the Aboriginal name Karakai (pronounced kah/ra/k/eye) which means 'to be active'.
The proposed name reflects the development plan for the park which includes a bushland reserve and clearing being developed with the construction of a playground, half basketball court and double bat ball court.
The GNB is encourages community comment before it considers the proposal.
Details of the proposal can be viewed, and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.

The closing date for submissions is 24 June 2023.
