Law Awards That Champion Pro Bono Work Up For Grabs

  • Community Service Law Awards open for nominations
  • Honours celebrate pro bono and community legal work

Nominations are open for the 2024 Attorney General's Community Service Law Awards.

Each year the awards are presented to lawyers and organisations from across Western Australia for outstanding pro bono and community legal work.

Now in their 18th year, the awards are open to individuals, legal firms and not-for-profit groups.

Maria Lamattina won the Individual Award last year after two decades leading social justice organisations and providing pro bono assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, and Aboriginal communities and corporations.

Lucy Thomas was chosen for the Legal Aid Panel Member Award for her lengthy service as an independent children's lawyer and mediator.

The Not-for-Profit Award went to the Street Law Centre WA, which provides the homeless or those at risk of homelessness with free, accessible legal services.

Tang Law won the Legal Firm Award for its pro bono legal work and support for migrants and victims of family violence.

This year's award winners will be announced at the Law Society of Western Australia's Gala Dinner on Friday, 6 September.

Nominations close Monday, 1 July and can be made at http://www.justice.wa.gov.au/lawaward

As stated by Attorney General John Quigley:

"It is always a pleasure to present these awards for legal work that's critical for ensuring equal access to justice.

"I encourage all to nominate a person or organisation doing selfless, exemplary work so they can receive the recognition they deserve.

"In addition to highlighting their efforts it is hoped these awards will inspire others to do pro bono and community work."
