Leader Joins Tasmanian Nurses Honour Roll

Tasmanian Government

An outstanding Tasmanian nursing leader has been inducted into the Tasmanian Nurses and Midwives Honour Roll in recognition of her exceptional contribution to nursing, research, and professional leadership.

Dr Louise Nicholson has been recognised for her leadership and service to the nursing profession over many years in the speciality of oncology, and for her widely respected work integrating advanced clinical practice with research.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, congratulated Dr Nicholson, who currently works as a Nurse Practitioner in cancer care at the Royal Hobart Hospital, where she continues to contribute to health research and service development.

"The Honour Roll recognises nurses and midwives who were born, trained, or have worked a significant portion of their professional careers in Tasmania, and who have demonstrated service above and beyond what is normally expected in their roles," Minister Archer said.

"It is my pleasure to congratulate Dr Louise Nicholson on her induction into the Honour Roll and express our gratitude for her service to the Tasmanian community over her distinguished career, particularly in oncology nursing and cancer care.

"In the week that we celebrate International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day, it is fitting that we recognise Dr Nicholson's achievements and dedication as a leading example of excellence within the profession."

Dr Nicholson was awarded a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner Degree (Research) in March 2019. Her doctoral thesis, "The perceptions of Australian oncology nurse practitioners undertaking research in practice," was among the earliest Australian studies to focus specifically on Nurse Practitioners working in the specialty of oncology.

Dr Nicholson's research identified key systemic and organisational barriers to Nurse Practitioner led research and highlighted the importance of institutional support in sustaining advanced nursing practice. This work has been published and cited within nursing and cancer care literature, contributing to broader professional knowledge and policy considerations.

Dr Nicholson has also demonstrated a longstanding commitment to professional service through her work with the Florence Nightingale Grants and Awards Committee. As Treasurer, she provides leadership in governance and financial stewardship, supporting education and research opportunities for nurses and midwives across Tasmania.

This voluntary work reflects a strong personal commitment to advancing the profession.

The Tasmanian Nurses and Midwives Honour Roll is judged by a senior panel of nurses and midwives and occurs annually as part of the celebrations for International Day of the Midwife (5 May) and International Nurses Day (12 May).
