Liberal party fails to deliver on puppy welfare

  • Liberal party’s true colours revealed in Upper House
  • Failure to support McGowan Government’s Stop Puppy Farming legislation puts reform on election agenda
  • A re-elected McGowan Government will prioritise plans to stop cruel practice of puppy farming and de-muzzling of greyhounds
  • The Liberal Party’s true colours have been revealed in the Parliament’s Upper House, with legislation to stop puppy farming failing to gain support in this term of Government.

The Stop Puppy Farming legislation, which also included reforms to demuzzle greyhounds, was not supported by the Liberals and will therefore need to be prioritised by a re-elected McGowan Government.

Laws to Stop Puppy Farming were a key McGowan Government election commitment in 2017 and were overwhelmingly supported by the community and the animal welfare sector.

By not supporting the legislation, the Liberal Party has provided defacto support to the cruel puppy farming industry.

As stated by Local Government Minister David Templeman:

“Puppy farming is a cruel and profit-driven industry that sees vulnerable dogs and puppies bred in horrible conditions and in a way that puts their health at risk.

“By refusing to back this legislation, the Liberal Party has given defacto support to this very disturbing practice and ignored the wishes of the community.

“The laws would also have removed the muzzles from greyhounds – another popular move that was backed by the animal welfare sector and the community.

“A re-elected McGowan Government will prioritise this legislation to ensure dogs and puppies are given the best start in life.”

As stated by Maylands MLA Lisa Baker:

“It is hard to fathom that the Liberal Party would stymie this important legislation.

“It was not long ago that I spoke at a vigil to remember the 15-month old Boxer ‘Strawberry’, who was bred to death in a puppy farm.

“Her puppies were sold in a WA pet shop. This practice must stop and if re-elected in March, I will continue to fight for the Stop Puppy Farming legislation.”
