Liberals Against Nuclear has welcomed incoming Liberal Senator Jacinta Price's passionate commitment to party values of "individual freedom and responsibility, minimal government intervention, and love for our nation" which should naturally position her as a voice against nuclear energy.
"With her strong belief in these principles, the Senator will surely recognise that nuclear policy requires extensive government subsidies, creates long-term waste management responsibilities, demands heavy regulation, and could put our farmers' precious agricultural water resources at risk," said Andrew Gregson, spokesperson for Liberals Against Nuclear.
"Given her stated dedication to rebuilding the party around minimal government intervention and individual liberty, we're confident Senator Price will stand firmly against any policy that fundamentally contradicts these cherished values.
"We need to learn from the past election, we need to listen to what we were told at the ballot box. The Party had a year to sell this policy - and people didn't buy it. The electoral defeat makes it clear that nuclear energy has driven people away from the Liberal Party."
Liberals Against Nuclear calls on all candidates for leader and deputy leader to reveal their position on nuclear energy ahead of Tuesday's party room ballot.
"On principle, all leadership candidates should commit to dumping the lumbering, socialist implementation of this policy," Mr Gregson said.
"By pursuing expensive nuclear energy that requires massive government intervention, the Liberal Party abandoned its core principles of fiscal responsibility and minimal government – right when Australians were most concerned about cost of living pressures."
"The party room ballot presents the first opportunity for the Liberal Party to demonstrate it has heard the voters' message. Continuing with a policy that has been so comprehensively rejected would only compound the electoral disaster."
