Local Automation Cuts Project Risk in Australasia

Industrial operators are under pressure to deliver projects faster, reduce risk, and maintain productivity in an environment where supply chains remain complex and project timelines allow little room for error.

In industries like mining, water and wastewater treatment, manufacturing, and infrastructure, each project can have unique and complex requirements, so automation solutions can benefit greatly from problem solving and customisation before arriving at the installation stage.

At Rockwell Automation's Sydney-based Integrated Manufacturing Facility, these risk reduction capabilities come together under one roof. The facility supports customers across Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia, providing local assembly, procurement, testing, logistics, and project customisation services that help reduce implementation risk and improve project outcomes.

"In times of supply chain challenges, and demanding project deadlines, having this capability in Australia offers distinct benefits to customers," says Rockwell Automation Lifecycle Services Director Michael Jones.

"Customers may want their automation products to be a different colour to match other site colours, they may need different wire numbers or labels, or they might need to make the entire solution totally different to the standard. In each case, our Sydney facility is equipped to handle the task all under one roof," he adds.

Strengthening industrial sovereign capability

The importance of sovereign capability has become a growing focus across Australian industry in recent years. In practice, that means having engineering and testing capability located within Australia rather than relying solely on offshore support.

"Sovereign capability extends beyond where products are manufactured. It is also about ensuring local access to the engineering knowledge, technical skills, and operational support required to keep critical industries running," says Jones.

"Our customers want access to world-class automation technology, but they also want local people who understand their operations, understand the nuances of local conditions, can respond quickly to changing requirements, and can work alongside them to solve problems."

Bringing global technology closer to the customer

Industrial automation projects frequently require modifications beyond standard product specifications, particularly to meet operational needs or compliance requirements such as Australian Standard AS3000.

Rather than managing multiple suppliers and contractors, customers can work with a single provider capable of overseeing procurement, assembly, testing and logistics from one location.

"Every project is different, so flexibility is key," says Jones. "Our approach is that nothing is too hard - our experts will find the solution, and deliver it faster with local support."

More than a supply chain function

Although the facility sits within Rockwell's Integrated Supply Chain organisation, its role extends beyond traditional supply chain activities.

The team acts as an extension of customers' engineering and project delivery functions, helping specify, assemble, test, and validate solutions before deployment. Through close collaboration with customers, contractors and system integrators, the manufacturing facility provides a bridge between product supply and successful operational outcomes.

"Industrial projects will always involve complexity, but complexity doesn't have to create uncertainty," says Jones. "By combining global automation technology with local engineering, assembly and testing capabilities, we help customers reduce risk, improve project outcomes, and build confidence that systems are designed, validated, and supported close to where they operate."
