Longitudinal dam replaces breakwaters

Breakwaters stick out from the riverbank, at right angles to the direction of the current and thus offer fierce resistance. An alternative that offers more opportunities for plants and animals is the longitudinal dam: a kilometer-long parallel dam that keeps the river navigable in summer and helps with rapid drainage in winter.
