Malak Residents to Plant Three New Garden Beds

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is inviting residents to roll up their sleeves and help grow a greener Malak by taking part in a Community Planting Day at Holzerland Greenbelt (5 Bengal Ct, Malak) on Saturday 11 July 2026.

The free community event will see more than 31 native trees planted by contractors, with shrubs and groundcovers planted by the community across three new garden beds, creating a greener, cooler and more welcoming space for the community to enjoy.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the planting day was a fantastic opportunity for residents to help shape the future of their neighbourhood while delivering on the community's vision for greener public spaces.

"We recently delivered traffic calming improvements in the area through the Chambers and Koolinda Crescent Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) project.

"As part of that project, we asked the community what they wanted to see more of in the area, and they told us they wanted greener neighbourhoods with more shade and trees.

"The Community Planting Day is a direct response to that feedback and another important step in creating a greener, safer and more connected neighbourhood that reflects the vision our community helped shape through the Place and Liveability Plan 2050.

"Together we're creating a greener, more liveable neighbourhood that will benefit the community for years to come," he said.

City of Darwin's Place and Liveability Plan identified Malak and surrounds as part of Darwin's Greenbelt and Recreational Neighbourhood.

Building on this work, consultation undertaken as part of the LATM project found strong community support for increased shade and tree planting, improved accessibility, upgraded parks, incorporation of public art and better public spaces.

These priorities directly informed the liveability improvements incorporated into the project, including the Community Planting Day.

Contractors will prepare the garden beds in advance, including irrigation, cultivation, topsoil and mulch, and will plant the larger native trees.

Community members will have the opportunity to help complete the project by planting shrubs and groundcovers.

The planting will take place at Holzerland Greenbelt, between Chambers Crescent and Holzerland Street, Malak, opposite the intersection of Chambers Crescent and Kapool Crescent.

City of Darwin will provide gloves, sunscreen and cold water for participants, with staff on site to assist throughout the morning.

Participants are encouraged to wear a hat and enclosed shoes for their comfort and safety.
