Man charged after colliding with police motorcycle in Parramatta

A man has been charged after allegedly using his vehicle as a weapon to avoid arrest in Parramatta yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 2.45pm today, a Highway Patrol officer, riding a marked police motorcycle, noticed a vehicle allegedly travelling at speed towards a school zone near the intersection of Charles and Macquarie streets.

The officer activated warning devices and attempted to pull the vehicle over.

The driver, a 36-year-old man, pulled over on Macquarie Street, not far from the Smith Street intersection.

As the officer pulled in behind the vehicle the driver sped away continuing through the intersection with the officer now in pursuit.

Due to erratic and dangerous driving the officer quickly terminated the pursuit and stopped his motorcycle near the intersection of Smith and George Street.

It will be alleged that the driver of the vehicle did a u-turn at that intersection and drove his vehicle towards the officer.

The Senior Constable jumped from his bike to avoid being hit as the vehicle collided with the motorcycle and continued on the incorrect side of the road on Smith Street.

The driver was arrested after being pulled over by another officer a short distance from the crash site.

He was subsequently charged at Parramatta Police Station with numerous driving offences including use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, drive recklessly/furiously at a speed or manner dangerous, police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, drive during period of disqualification, and a warrant for revocation of parole.

He was refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Local Court today tomorrow.

The police officer was not hurt during the incident.
