Man charged over 'glassing' assault in Haymarket

Police have charged a man following an alleged assault with a bottle in Haymarket overnight, NSW Police say.

Shortly before 2.30am today tomorrow, a 35-year-old man was sitting on a park bench on the western side of Belmore Park near Hay Street.

Police will allege that a 55-year-old man approached from behind and struck the younger man’s head with a bottle which smashed.

The assault continued with the man getting struck to the face, chest and upper thigh.

The 55-year-old man walked to the intersection of Hay and Pitt Street where he was arrested by police officers who were aware of the incident from CCTV.

The officers then assisted the injured man until he was treated by Ambulance Paramedics and conveyed to St Vincents Hospital in a stable condition.

Crime scenes were established in the park and on Pitt Street which were subsequently examined by forensic specialists.

The 55-year-old man of no fixed place of abode was charged with reckless wounding.

He was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court by video link later today tomorrow.
