Man in court over assault at Tamworth

A man will face court after allegedly assaulting another man and a police officer in the state's north-east yesterday.

About 1.45am (Friday 1 January 2021), emergency services were called to a taxi rank on Brisbane Street, Tamworth, following reports of an assault.

Police have been told two men, aged 41 and 50, were waiting at the rank when they were approached by a 24-year-old man and an argument broke out.

The younger man allegedly punched the older man before punching the man in his 40s, who fell backwards striking his head on a nearby wooden bench, knocking him unconscious.

The two men were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Tamworth Base Hospital.

The older man sustained minor injuries; however, his friend was treated for lacerations to his face and back as well as bleeding on the brain.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District attended and commenced and investigations.

Following inquiries, the 24-year-old man was arrested on Bridge Street, Tamworth, where he allegedly failed to comply, and officers deployed OC spray. The man allegedly continued to struggle with officers and was able to free himself and run from police.

A police dog assisted in the man's arrest and he was taken to Tamworth Hospital and treated for puncture wounds to his leg.

The man has been charged with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, assault police, resist arrest, and inmate escape/attempt to escape from lawful custody.

The Oxley Vale man was granted conditional bail to appear at Tamworth Local Court on Monday 25 January 2021.
