Today, the Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, met with Germany's Federal Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius, to discuss shared security priorities, defence industrial cooperation, and key geopolitical developments.
The Ministers reaffirmed the strong defence relationship between Canada and Germany, including close cooperation through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and continued support for Ukraine.
Minister McGuinty highlighted Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy and discussed opportunities to strengthen transatlantic defence supply chains, increase collaboration between Canadian and German industries, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises across Allied supply chains.
Minister McGuinty also welcomed Germany's participation as an observer in negotiations to establish the Defence Security and Resilience Bank, noting the initiative's potential to strengthen NATO's defence industrial base and address critical financing gaps for defence-related suppliers.
The Ministers exchanged views on Arctic security, the Maritime Security Partnership initiative, and the evolving security situation in the Middle East, including developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
The meeting concluded with discussions on preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Ankara, Turkey in July 2026, and a shared commitment to advancing Allied cooperation and collective defence.
