MCRI Joins Ground-breaking Aboriginal Health Research Accord

Murdoch Children's Research Institute

Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) has proudly become a member of the Victorian Aboriginal Health, Medical and Wellbeing Research Accord, marking a significant step forward in ethical, culturally safe research practices for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Victoria.

Launched in October 2023, the Accord (marra ngarrgoo, marra goorri) is a landmark initiative led by the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO).

The Accord aims to align health, medical and wellbeing research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander principles of self-determination, ensuring that research is conducted in ways that respect Indigenous cultures, knowledges, and aspirations.

For over 35 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Victoria have advocated for greater control over research that affects their lives. Historically, many studies have failed to deliver meaningful benefits to Community, often lacking cultural sensitivity and ethical rigour.

MCRI's membership of the Accord reflects our commitment to transforming this legacy. As Australia's largest child health research institute, MCRI recognises the importance of co-designing research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, embedding cultural integrity and data sovereignty into every stage of the research process.

"MCRI is honoured to walk alongside Community in this journey," said MCRI Director Professor Kathryn North AC. "Joining the Accord isn't just a matter of policy - it's a promise to listen, to learn, and to ensure our work lifts up Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families."

The Accord is governed by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led Governance Group, which oversees its implementation, evaluation, and strategic direction. It forms a key action under the Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Partnership Agreement between VACCHO and the Victorian Government, endorsed by Cabinet in May 2023.

By joining marra ngarrgoo, marra goorri, MCRI reaffirms its dedication to ethical research that not only advances science but also strengthens trust, respect, and outcomes for Community.
