One of the world's leading medical radiation physicists, UniSA Professor Eva Bezak, has been named a 2025 Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).
Prof Bezak is among 35 new Fellows elected to join the prestigious group, which recognises outstanding achievements in the fields of applied science and engineering.
Internationally renowned for her leadership in cancer therapy and medical innovation, Prof Bezak has developed world-leading modelling software and new pharmaceuticals to improve cancer therapies, shaped national healthcare policy, and advanced oncology infrastructure in Australia and the region.
Formerly Chief Physicist at Royal Adelaide Hospital, Prof Bezak was appointed Professor in Medical Radiation at the University of South Australia in 2015.
She has advised governments on radiation matters, served as President of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine, and is currently President-elect of the International Organization for Medical Physics.
Prof Bezak also has active collaborations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Her election to ATSE comes on the eve of Prof Bezak convening the IUPESM World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, to be held in Adelaide next week, from September 29-4 October.
It is the first time in 22 years that Australia has hosted the congress, bringing together more than 1200 physicists, biomedical engineers and scientists to exchange cutting-edge research, explore groundbreaking innovations and forge new collaborations in medicine and healthcare.
Next week, Prof Bezak will be announced as the incoming President of the International Organisation of Medical Physics (IOMP). In 2028 she will take over the reins of the International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM), the umbrella organisation for IOMP and the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE).
