Meet Team Powering Faster Electrical Licensing

Behind-the-scenes work with a real impact on WA's economy

A strong and resilient economy needs thriving businesses, skilled workers and modern regulation. At the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety, we're helping deliver all three.

Nowhere is this more important than in Western Australia's construction industry. As demand for skilled trades grows and workforce shortages continue, getting qualified workers licensed and job-ready quickly is critical.

Over the past few years, demand for licensing services, particularly for electricians, has increased significantly as the transition to sustainable energy accelerates. Recognising the vital need to keep pace with industry, the department introduced some key improvement initiatives, including a dedicated Electrical Licensing Team.

The Electrical Licensing Team plays a vital role in assessing applications and supporting licensing processes. Through streamlined workflows, increased capacity and stronger partnerships, the team is helping electricians enter and remain in the workforce sooner while continuing to uphold regulatory standards.

The team's efforts have delivered a significant improvement in processing times, with a 42 per cent reduction in the average time to finalise new applications.

A collaboration with the Department of Training and Workforce Development has also simplified licensing pathways, making it easier for skilled workers to get on the tools faster.

While we've made significant progress, we're continuing to look for ways to improve. By listening to feedback and looking for better ways of working, we're continuing to enhance our licensing services.

We remain focused on identifying opportunities to streamline processes, improve customer experience and respond to the needs of industry so we deliver better outcomes for the Western Australian community.
