Meter Thief Caught At Nuri

A man has been arrested after allegedly stealing water meters in the Barossa yesterday.

Police were called to King Way, Nuriootpa about 4pm on Monday 19 May following reports a man was removing water meters from houses under construction. Witnesses reported the suspect leaving the scene in a Volkswagen hatchback.

Patrols attended the area and stopped the vehicle on Old Kapunda Road. The driver, a 61-year-old man of no fixed address, underwent drug and alcohol testing and allegedly returned a positive result for methamphetamine.

A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly located several water meters and lengths of copper piping.

The man was arrested and charged with unlawful possession, driving whilst disqualified, stating a false name, and breach of bail. He was refused police bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court later today.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for 28 days.
