Minns Labor's $100 Rego Cut Benefits Motorists

NSW Gov

From today, drivers across New South Wales will begin receiving their vehicle registration renewal notices with a $100 discount applied, as part of the Minns Labor Government's plan to provide cost of living relief to families.

Drivers of privately owned vehicles will receive $100 off their rego, while motorcyclists will receive an $80 discount.

Registration notices are sent to drivers around six weeks before payment is due and owners with registrations due in September should begin receiving their reminders in the coming weeks. The $100 discount to registration is set to benefit the owners of around 4.4 million vehicles.

The one-off discount will be automatically applied when an owner receives notification that their eligible vehicle is:

  • due for registration
  • when a new vehicle is registered in NSW
  • or when an eligible vehicle which has been unregistered in NSW, is re-registered.

The Minns Labor Government is helping families with the cost of transport to help ease some of the pressure on household budgets.

The weekly toll cap has been lowered to $50 for 12 months and toll admin fees - which cost motorists $60 million last year - have been scrapped.

Opal fares have also been frozen for the next 12 months to help people with the cost of public transport.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib said:

"The cost of getting around is putting pressure on home budgets, this is about putting money back into people's pockets so it can be spent where it's needed most.

"This registration discount is on top of more than $320 million in toll cap relief paid to drivers who are getting quick help with their home budget.

"If you own a car or motorbike, there's more home budget help on the way with rego discounts automatically applied through Service NSW when you go online, visit a service centre or renew over the phone."

Minister for Roads and Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison said:

"I am pleased to announce that from today, motorists will start receiving rego notices with $100 deducted for privately owned light vehicles, and an $80 discount for motorcyclists.

"The Minns Labor Government is helping ease cost-of-living pressures by putting money back into the pockets of millions of NSW drivers.

"This is a simple way to help families across the state with one of the everyday costs of owning a car or motorcycle, because we know every dollar counts.

"We're delivering on our commitment to provide practical support that makes a real difference to household budgets."
