Mitchell Shire Wins Funding for Safer Local Roads

Mitchell Shire Council has welcomed funding through the Victorian Government's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program to deliver targeted road safety improvements across Wallan and Seymour.

The Safe Local Roads and Streets Program is delivered by the Department of Transport and Planning in partnership with the Transport Accident Commission to support councils in planning and delivering safety upgrades on local roads.

Three Mitchell Shire projects will receive funding under the program:

  • Queen Street, Wallan: Installation of a raised priority crossing to improve pedestrian safety and help slow vehicle speeds in a busy local area.
  • Tarcombe Road, Seymour: Installation of a raised priority crossing and speed limit reductions to improve safety for pedestrians and reduce the risk and severity of crashes.
  • Wallara Waters Estate, Wallan: Safer speed limits, raised crossings and traffic calming measures to create safer local streets and improve safety for residents, pedestrians and road users throughout the estate.

Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall said the funding would support practical upgrades that improve safety on local streets used by the community every day.

"We welcome this funding from the Victorian Government through the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, which will help Council deliver important road safety improvements in Wallan and Seymour," he said.

"Local roads are where many people walk, ride, drive and access community facilities every day. These projects will help create safer and more forgiving road environments for everyone using our streets.

"Raised crossings and traffic calming measures help slow vehicles down and improve visibility for pedestrians, reducing the likelihood and severity of crashes.

"Local governments manage a massive part of Victoria's road network, so partnerships like this are critical in helping councils deliver the upgrades needed to improve safety outcomes for the community.

"These projects are another example of Council working proactively to identify high-risk areas and securing external funding to deliver targeted road safety improvements."

Council is now planning delivery of these projects and will update the community when works are set to begin.

Community members are encouraged to explore the "Whose Road Is It?" tool, an interactive map that helps residents identify the responsible authority for roads within the Shire.
