The city's growing northern and southern suburbs are proving to be well-read and keen to connect with community services, with continued support shown for Townsville City Council's Mobile Library Service.
The Mobile Library Service, delivered by a nimble white van that traverses the outer reaches of the city, visits a number of suburbs on a rotating, fortnightly basis.
Magnetic Island enjoys weekly stops every Tuesday, whilst Rollingstone, Bluewater, Saunders Beach and Deeragun are serviced one week and Elliot Springs, Woodstock, Burdell and Deeragun the next.
The Burdell stop, situated at the popular, family-friendly Junction Café, is the newest, and has enjoyed growing support since the van began regularly servicing the suburb in July last year.
Divisional councillor Brodie Phillips said he was pleased the booming northern suburbs were being provided with a key community service right on their doorsteps.
"The northern suburbs, and particularly Burdell, are growing at a rate of knots and with that sort of growth comes demand for more shops and services," Cr Phillips said.
"We are seeing our retail offerings expanding up this way and also, keeping up with this pace, it's great to see the delivery of a core Council service – being the library – delivered through the mobile service.
"The van stops by every second Thursday at Junction Café, which is a family favourite for North Shore locals, so this is a reminder for those who love their great local coffee to consider timing a stop when the van is here."
Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said he was pleased to see the outer suburbs of Townsville well-serviced by the Mobile Library Van.
"The Burdell stop has quickly become popular as families make the most of the mobile library's proximity to the playground and café," Cr Dametto said.
"At Elliot Springs, the mobile library continues to attract regular visitors, providing an additional layer of service to the family-friendly amenities already situated at Wadda Mooli Park."
Junction Café owner Kayla Schofield said Burdell families were enjoying the library van's regular visits.
"The Mobile Library Van is a welcome addition to our café and playground space here at The Junction – we love seeing the van rolling up every second Thursday," she said.
"We have a lot of families who stop by here with bubs and young children, and the mobile library being available adds another activity option for them, which I know is being appreciated."
The Mobile Library Van is next due to visit Burdell this Thursday 9 April.
