More education and knowledge to build bright future

Universities Australia welcomes the Prime Minister's announcement of additional, free TAFE places to ensure the workforce has the skilled people it needs.

"Australia needs strong, well-functioning sectors in both higher education and vocational education to give every Australian genuine opportunity," Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said.

"Over the next five years, 9 out of 10 jobs will require a post-secondary qualification.

"We've always said we need more education and knowledge, not less, and more skilled, people not fewer, to build a bright future for Australia.

"Ensuring the country has the pipeline of workers that employers and the economy need has never been more important - especially as Australia faces a critical skills shortage.

"As we embark on day one of the Jobs and Skills Summit, we look forward to working with colleagues in the TAFE sector, as well as government, businesses and unions, to help set the workforce up for the future."
