Motorcycle Awareness Month: Share Road Safely

Wentworth Shire

Motorcycles have a narrower profile than cars and can be harder to detect in traffic.

Drivers should actively look for riders by scanning the road, checking mirrors and blind spots, and checking again before turning, entering an intersection, changing lanes or pulling away from the kerb. Drivers should also allow riders sufficient space to avoid potholes, loose material and other road surface hazards.

Riders can help manage risk by:

  • using headlights to improve visibility
  • maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles
  • avoiding other vehicles' blind spots
  • setting their speed for the road and weather conditions
  • braking before entering a curve
  • using a road position that provides visibility and space
  • assuming that another road user may not have seen them.

Drivers and riders should remain alert and avoid aggressive or unpredictable behaviour.

Look again for motorcycles. To another road user, the road may appear clear.
