Construction is complete and Stage 2 of the Dwellingup Mountain Bike Trail network is now officially open for riding.
The multimillion-dollar Dwellingup Adventure Trails project has now delivered a world-class 108-kilometre mountain bike trail network and contributed to establishing Dwellingup as a leading trails destination.
Funding for the $8.5 million Dwellingup Adventure Trails initiative included a $5 million contribution from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), which also led the construction.
The Shire of Murray provided $3.5 million, supported by the Commonwealth Government's Building Better Regions Fund.
In 2021, the State Government invested a further $2.7 million through Royalties for Regions to deliver the Dwellingup Gap Project, completing the trail network and enhancing related infrastructure.
DBCA has since secured an additional $1.7 million from the Commonwealth's Peel Regional Trails initiative to support ongoing trail and infrastructure development, with works continuing in stages. To date, the combined Dwellingup Adventure Trails and Dwellingup Gap initiatives have delivered:
40 kilometres of new mountain bike trails in nearby Lane Poole Reserve;
- upgrades to the existing Marrinup and Turner Hill mountain bike trails;
- 68 kilometres of mountain bike trail around Dwellingup;
- the 'Nyingarn Bidi' three-day/two-night Bibbulmun Track walking loop;
- upgrades to the 18-kilometre King Jarrah Walk Trail, including a shorter walk option;
- construction of the Dwaarlindjirraap suspension bridge and new river access stairs along the Murray River; and
- sealing of Park and Murray Valley Roads in Lane Poole Reserve.
The new and upgraded trails have attracted national and international events including the annual Dwellingup 100 mountain bike race and UCI Masters Mountain Bike World Championships event.
The results to date have transformed Dwellingup into a world-class trails destination attracting local, national, and international mountain biking and outdoor recreation tourists.
In October 2024, Trails WA named Dwellingup as one of the first two accredited Trail Towns in Western Australia, along with Collie. Dwellingup was also named Australia's top Tiny Tourism Town in 2023.
