Murder investigation at Yarrabah

Queensland Police have charged a man following investigations into the circumstances of a 5-year-old boy's death in Far North Queensland.

Initial inquiries indicate around 12.30pm on Tuesday, August 16, the boy was taken to the Yarrabah Hospital with life-threatening injuries and was flown to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition.

After being alerted to the matter, police have commenced an investigation into the incident and inquiries are ongoing.

Detectives from Cairns CPIU established an Incident Centre in the Cairns Police Facility with assistance from Child Trauma Unit detectives from Brisbane.

The child passed away yesterday, Monday August 22.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged with one count each of murder, grievous bodily harm and torture. He has been remanded in custody to also face two counts each of assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed and assault occasioning bodily harm in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday, August 23.

The man and boy were known to each other.
