"My degree gave me motivation for my recovery"

Cardiff University

Madeleine Spencer says her studies have been her motivator as she recovers from anorexia.

The 21-year-old, who achieved a first in her dissertation and who graduates with a 2:1 in English Literature and History, said the past three years had been challenging.

"I found it really difficult during the pandemic," said Madeleine from Ticehurst in East Sussex. "Nevertheless, it was a shock when I was diagnosed with anorexia. My degree is something I feel passionate about and it gave me the focus I needed to turn things around."

She added: "My personal tutor has been so supportive and sorted everything out when I had to take time off to focus on my recovery."

Madeleine now intends to take a law conversion course at Cardiff University before heading to Australia to work.

"I grew up in Australia so it will be great to spend some time there. I'm excited for the future," she said. "I think my story shows that people experiencing difficult times don't have to be defined by them. I'm looking forward to celebrating with my friends and family."
