Nambour Tip Closes for Major Upgrade

Sunshine Coast Council

A major transformation of the Nambour Waste Precinct is underway to sustainably manage our region's future waste and support a circular economy.

To support this upgrade, the Nambour tip will be temporarily closed from Monday, July 28, to Sunday, September 7, reopening Monday, September 8.

During the closure, residents and commercial operators who usually visit the Nambour site are asked to please use the Buderim or Caloundra tip and resource recovery centres.

Please use alternative facilities

These facilities may be busier than usual, so please be patient and kind to our staff as they work hard to serve you as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused during this important upgrade.

Why the Nambour tip closure is necessary

The closure will allow construction of a new access road to connect new and future buildings and facilities within the site including a temporary resource recovery centre until a new facility is built and the expanded landfill.

Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said the upgrade was a significant investment in sustainably managing our region's future waste.

"As our region continues to grow, so does the need for smarter, more sustainable ways to manage waste," Cr Suarez said.

"The challenge we face is ensuring long-term waste solutions that protect our environment and support a circular economy.

Plan for future waste

"Council's Resource Recovery Strategy outlines our plan for a smarter, more sustainable solution to managing our growing region's waste. The goal is that, by 2041, nothing ends up in landfill.

"It includes upgrades to our waste infrastructure to support our region's circular economy - which considers rubbish not as something to be buried in the ground, but a resource to be reused again and again.

Transformation contributing to a sustainable Sunshine Coast

Cr Suarez said to support this, the Nambour Waste Precinct was undergoing a significant transformation.

"The upgrade will help us better manage future waste and support our region's circular economy - which means reusing, recycling and reducing waste so that materials stay in use for as long as possible," Cr Suarez said.

"It includes a state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (completed in 2023), a landfill expansion (which is underway), and still to come, a new Resource Recovery Centre and landfill gas to energy plant.

"We also improved road safety with a signalised intersection at Cooney Road and Nambour-Bli Bli Road.

"These upgrades will help us better manage future waste, reduce landfill dependency, and lead the way to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Sunshine Coast."
